Dana 44 Front axle widths, application on 1985
Chevy axle is from 1974 3-quarter ton truck
Wagoneer axle is from a 1978 “narrow track” wagoneer
This data was complied when we were completing my SOA axle swap project on my 1985 CJ7.  We were originally going to go with the Wagoneer D44 front, and we procured that axle and measured it, then we decided to cut the Chevy down - as it has the spring perches moled into the top of the tubes, making things easier for the SOA. We first had the chevy cut 4" on the long side, this is the minimum you have to cut to get away with not having to outboard the springs.  However, we found that this left the axle too wide to ever dream of having flares cover the tire, so we had it cut again, this time taking an additional 2 1/2 off the long side (for a total of 6 1/2") and 2 1/2" off the short side.
The overall length is estimated on a 12.5 width tire on a 8" AR 767 rim
